Mark developed this graph where you can see the highs and lows of the economy from 1940: Interesting that a few decades ago the HIGHS where really high and the LOWS were really low but since the early 70s there hasnt seemed to be a significant LOW until now. Also interesting that the lowest HIGH was in the eary 2000s, right after the dot-bomb.   A low HIGH and then dunking right into this current LOW?   Not fun. Here are some of the questions I want to ask Mark (questions are relevant for job seekers, career managers, business owners, CEOs of Me, Inc., and those working for someone else): What does this mean for us TODAY? Assume we are towards the bottom of this recession what should we be doing today in our jobs or career management? If we start to climb soon, then what?   What should we do? Im guessing it wont be all rosie (sp?) right away but wont we manager our stuff (careers, business, jobs) differently? What are you projected time-frames for coming out of this recession? How should we plan accordingly? What will it mean when we are above the green or black lines again? What might above the line(s) look like?   Short, fast, ? How long will the good be good? Polarize People Personal branding pundits often advise against being a “jack of all trades,” or a generalist that isn’t very good at something specific. They say choose a niche and dominate it. Be great at something, not just good at a lot of things. What does Guy believe? He suggests being great for some people rather than trying to please everyone. Do not be afraid to make people react strongly for or against you. As my former business partner used to remind me, you’re not doing something right unless you’re pissing someone off. That doesn’t mean be a jerk. That means just don’t try to appeal to all people, or you’ll end up a mile wide and an inch deep, mediocre to everyone. You’ll never find soul mates that way. 4. Find a Few Soul Mates We’re all on this journey together. It’s silly to think we are alone in our careers or in our life. Find people who balance you. Then make time for them. If you’re busy, make plans in advance so you have to schedule around them. You’re only one person, so surround yourself with people whose skills round you off. 5. Dont Let the Bozos Grind You Down Not everyone is going to like you. Not everyone will always agree with you. That’s a fact of life. So don’t let criticism or doubters bring you down. As you live out your mantra, it’s your responsibility to be strong in the face of “no,” and “you can’t do that.” Guy says, ignore people who say you won’t succeed. I agree. Can the Holy Swoosh Save the Tiger Woods Career Brand Have you seen the new Nike ad with Tiger Woods featuring the voice of his deceased father? It looks like Tiger may have added some new brand attributes to his already tarnished image including, creepy, odd, and opportunistic. And Im wondering if Nike and Tiger would have been better off just leaving the scandal alone and letting time heal some of the wounds.But beyond that, the ad prompted me to revisit a conversation I started when the Tiger Woods scandal was first leaked. Should Tigers career be judged based on his indiscretions or based on his contribution to the sport of golf?I get all the theories of branding and the importance of creating and living a brand that is authentic and integral to who that person is as a human being. But do I really need to be concerned about all aspect of a persons lifestyle or do I only need to pay attention to those brand attributes that impact me? If my accountant commits tax fraud, that is integral to his professional brand and cause for concern . If my doctor is practicing medicine without a license, I will take issue with that. But does what these professionals do in their personal life affect their ability to deliver a quality service to me? Not really.And what about me? Would you want to know about all my personal mistakes or indiscretions before hiring me to write your resume? If I had done something that you dont agree with morally, would that mean that I was any less skilled at my craft?And where do we draw the line on whats right and wrong? Who ultimately gets to decide? If Tiger had been a heroin addict, or had been caught shoplifting, or was someone who was trying to climb the corporate ladder and was caught lying on his resume, would we treat him differently?Im certainly not condoning the actions of Tiger Woods. I just think that celebrity-dom creates brands that are impossible to maintain and forces famous figures to take on responsibilities that they never asked for when they first chose to pursue their passion .At the end of the day, shouldnt Tiger ultimately be judged on his contribution to his sport? And shouldnt Nike be promoting his impact and influence on that sport rather than abandoning the essence of the Tiger Woods career brand? What do you think?

What To Do When Your Launch Tanks - When I Grow Up It’s the holidays, and that usually means one thing: launches! Whether you’re a product-based biz that is just wrapping up ( pun intended, always) your big season for 2018, or a service provider who is trying to drum up some sales for an offer in the new year, I have a feeling you’ve just done a big-ish push to bring some clients or customers in the door. And while I’m hoping you hit your goals and brought in the money you need, I’ve been in business for 10 years and believe me I know what it’s like to fall short of it, either by a little or a lot. I’ve written about this previously, but that was almost 7 years ago (!) and I definitely have more to say.
